God Comes To Earth

In the Apostles Creed we say Jesus was 'conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.' Maybe that just rolls off the tongue because it's a bit familiar, but the Christmas story of God coming to earth, is actually totally amazing!
It begs the question however: why did Jesus need to be conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin? And why is it so important that we hold to that doctrine when every other religion denies it.
