It's not about rules

Jesus saves us by grace alone, through faith alone. The Colossian church knew this truth but were then faced with competing voices. The false teachers were trying to get them to follow a bunch of rules to maintain and grow their relationship with Jesus; rather than just depending on Him. Paul points out how pointless and distracting those attempts are, and that religious ceremonies lack any real power to bring about change in our lives.
